SEALS

"The average cost of rehabilitating a
seal after the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska was $80,000. At a
special ceremony, two of the most expensively saved animals were
released back into the wild amid cheers and applause from onlookers. A
minute later, in full view, a killer whale ate them both. "

PENGUINS

"The highlight of Dyan's career was flying to South Africa as part of an international team of penguin experts to help save 20,000 penguins from an oil spill. The rehabilitation effort took three months and 556,000 hours of volunteer labor, and due to the incredible response to the penguins in crisis, 91% of the oiled birds were saved and released back into the wild. This event was historic in its size and success rate, and represents the largest number of animals within a species ever to be rescued and rehabilitated. Dyan calls her participation in this rescue the most challenging, yet most rewarding, experience of her life.
